A crowd of 22,000 people have been evacuated from music festival Tomorrowland Unite Barcelona in Spain after a fire broke out, ravaging the main stage. Revellers fled the Tomorrowland Unite electronic music concert in Barcelona as clouds of smoke billowed into the sky and flames engulfed a large stage decoration before spreading across the speaker system and a big screen.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, although local media reported that it could have been triggered by a firework display which was part of the show.
The flames were soon brought under control and put out, although festival organisers said the main stage had been totally destroyed.
Statement from Tomorrowland Unite Barcelona organisers:
“Tonight, July 29th 2017, the UNITE Barcelona stage caught fire due to a technical malfunction. “Thanks to the professional intervention of the authorities all 22,000 visitors were evacuated safely and without reports of injuries. “Authorities will follow up and continue the investigation with the local Spanish organiser of UNITE.”
